On Page SEO Basics – URL, Tags, etc..

When building a website, there is a very basic on page SEO strategy that many developers tend to forget to implement which is to include some important keywords that are relevant to the content on the website, in various sections of each individual page.

One of the ways search engines find your content is through search terms and if those words are not present on your website, the chances of your site showing up on the first page of Google for searches that include those words are very slim. Specific words are important to have on your website if you want it to be viewed by users coming in through search engines, so the question now is, what words should you be using?

Make sure the search terms you are using coincide with the content of each individual page and when possible, try to include some of them in the following sections of each page.


On this website, you will notice that on the navigation bar, there is a link to various services offered on If you click on the link shown in the image below, you will end up on a page with the following URL:
As you can see, the targeted longtail keyword in this case is “digital marketing services” and by including those words in the URL of that page, I just made it easier for people using search engines like Google, to find that page. Also, if someone out there happens to find those services useful and wants to make reference to them on their own website, they will possibly grab that link and use it. The link juice generated from various websites pointing to your page is still an important factor to show up in Google’s SERP’s so implement this strategy ASAP.


The title of your page is very important, not only does it allow you to slip a keyword in it, you also want to keep it interesting and on topic because that title is part of what is displayed in most search engines. Here is an example of where the title is displayed on Google:

Meta Description Tag

The meta description tag is just as important as your title as it is also displayed in search engines. By looking at the image above, you will see the contents of the meta description tag showing up on Google in gray, directly under the URL. It is one more opportunity to insert a keyword or two directly related to the content of that specific page on your website. By using this strategy you are helping future users of your website find your content.


The header tag, or the <h1> tag in HTML, will usually be the title of a post. There are other header tags in HTML too, like an h2, h3, h4, etc. These provide one more opportunity to include your keywords and improve your on page SEO strategy. The H1 is normally the largest text that appears on a page, make sure you keep your website easy to read and optimized, striking this balance requires some technique but mostly common sense.

HTML <img> alt Attribute

Here is yet one more location where a keyword or two will not hurt, especially if your website uses many images and there is not much text on it content wise, to work with. The most important rule is to keep your alt text on topic with the content of the image and the page it’s on, while providing an accurate description of that image.
